Hungry for Equality
The LGBTQA movement is something I’ve always held dear to my heart. Its sole purpose is not to simply create equality for those in the gay community. The LGBTQA movement pursues equality, love, and acceptance for everyone. Jackie Biskupsi, Salt Lake City’s newly elected mayor, and first ever openly lesbian mayor, said, “It is about people. It is about effecting change.”
We at Studio Elevn continually strive to do our part in effecting essential, and positive change in our community. In merriment of Salt Lake City’s 2016 Pride festival, Studio Elevn and We Are Elevn curated our “Hungry for Equality” photo series. This features local members and allies in the LGBTQA community. It’s colorful rainbow aesthetic pays homage to the universal symbol for equality, the Rainbow Flag. We then incorporated one of society’s most popular forms of phallic symbolism, fruit. Incorporating these strikingly sexual tones allowed us to convey a sense of empowerment towards embracing sexuality and individuality.
The recent tragedy in Orlando has devastated the nation and the LGBTQA community. This hateful act of violence has struck to the core, leaving people discouraged and unsure of how to recover from this crippling massacre. The loved ones, which we have too soon lost, will never be forgotten. The time is now to embrace, support, and uplift one another. Let us love our differences; let us embrace our individual identity’s; let us love one another; let us make this world a better one, for everyone.
"Step out from behind the shadows. Shake your shame, and all your sorrow. Take your place, and dance out in the sun. No one should live undercover. No one is above the other. Freedom is a gift for everyone."
